AI Share of Voice

Also known as: AI SOV, share of AI voice

AI share of voice is a measure of a brand's relative presence in AI-generated answers compared with competitors across a defined set of relevant prompts or topics.

In simple terms

Where visibility measures your own presence, share of voice frames it competitively: of all the brands that could appear for these prompts, how large a slice is you?

It is usually expressed as a proportion — your mentions or citations relative to the total across your competitive set.

Why it matters

Share of voice turns AI visibility into a benchmark. A brand can grow its raw presence yet still lose ground if competitors grow faster.

It highlights where you are winning or losing the AI conversation in your category, guiding where to invest in content.

How it works

A representative prompt set is run across AI systems, and mentions or citations are tallied for your brand and competitors. Your share is your portion of that total.

Because AI answers vary, share of voice is most useful as a trend across many prompts rather than a precise instantaneous figure.

Example

Across 100 category prompts, three vendors dominate assistant answers. If your brand appears in 15% of them and a rival in 40%, your AI share of voice is lower — a gap you can target with content.

How to apply it

  • Benchmark against the competitors that actually appear in your category's answers.
  • Find the prompts where rivals appear and you do not, and close those gaps.
  • Build topical depth so you appear across more of the relevant prompt set.

Frequently asked questions

How is AI share of voice calculated?

Typically by running a defined prompt set across AI systems and measuring your brand's mentions or citations as a proportion of the total across your competitive set.

Is a single measurement reliable?

No. Because AI answers vary, share of voice is best read as a trend across many prompts and repeated measurements, not a one-time number.
